Hellegatsplaten
A vast nature reserve on the eastern side of Goeree-Overflakkee. Woods, thickets, reeds, grassy areas and open water alternate.
The special alternation of freshwater and saltwater vegetation is home to all kinds of special birds. You can spot marsh harrier, bluethroat, black-headed gull, spoonbill, osprey and recently even the European bald eagle. The hellegatsplaten are grazed by heck cattle and fjord horses. The Hellegatsplaten itself is not accessible, but can be admired from the bird-watching huts of the bird boulevard. And from the watchtower at Ooltgensplaat.
