Goedereede's tower, erected between 1457 and 1512 by the renowned master builders of the Keldermans family from Mechelen, is a place full of history and melodies. For centuries, this imposing tower served as a reliable beacon of light for shipping.
A carillon as the jewel of Europe
In 1977, the tower received a carillon with 53 bells, considered one of the finest in all of Europe. The carillon spreads its silver tones over Goedereede every 15 minutes. The town carillonneur regularly takes you on a musical journey with this special instrument. Take a seat in the listening garden between the tower and the church and be enchanted by the beautiful melodies.
A climb to the top
Climb the 217 steps to the top and be surprised by a panoramic view of Goeree-Overflakkee, the expansive Grevelingen and the vast North Sea. Information boards around the tower flat will tell you what can be seen in the distance.
Fun stops
On the way up, you can take a break at several places. On the first floor you will find the lighthouse exhibition, where you will learn more about the church tower's lighthouse past. On the second floor, you will discover the keyboard of the carillon and the old, no longer functioning clockwork that moved the bells back then. A modern version has taken over. In the third attic is the carillon itself, an experience to walk among the bells, although you have to keep your ears shut for a moment when the automatic playing mechanism kicks in. Every 15 minutes you can enjoy a concert by the city carillonneur.
