When you hear the name 'De Spin', you might immediately think of the itchy critter. But this nature reserve has nothing to do with an actual spider. The shape of the centuries-old system of dykes has caused Staatbosbeheer to call this area that. De Spin consists of four contiguous historical dykes. These are the Panksdijkje and the Sint Christoffeldijk in Sommelsdijk and the Oud-Kraaijerdijk and the Onwaardsedijk Noord in Dirksland.
Flowery dykes
In the 15th and 16th centuries, these dykes formed the first flood defences. Now you can cycle fantastically along these flower-rich dykes. In spring, hawthorns bloom and the hedgehog anther with its deep pink colour and sweet-sour apple scent. Rare plants like agrimony, cross thistle and wild marjoram are also found in De Spin. In spring, the fields turn yellow with rapeseed and elderberry blossom. A delight for plant lovers
Cycling over the dykes
After a bike ride along the flower-rich dykes, it's time to take a break. Its central location means you'll be in the centre of Dirksland or Middelharnis in no time. Treat yourself to the fresh sandwiches at Lunchroom Broodje in Dirksland. Or plop down on one of the many terraces in Middelharnis.
Pass by yourself
Experience a tasty and colourful experience at Pluktuin de Kruidenstee. The entire garden is open for a viewing and guided tour. Afterwards, enjoy a cup of tea with home-grown herbs and homemade pastries. Or choose this natural ambiance for a delicious High Tea arrangement with home-made dishes using ingredients from the garden. Drop by and experience for yourself what this fine spot has to offer. In the months of June to September, the picking garden is open by appointment. High tea is also possible outside the opening months.
