At A Seal seal sanctuary in Stellendam, seals are taken in and cared for until the vet has declared them healthy, and they can be released back into the sea. These sick, injured and orphaned seals have been found along the coast between Cadzand and IJmuiden. After an observation period, they are admitted to the shelter. At A Seal, you can see how the seals are cared for, and learn all about the seal and its habitat. No seals live there permanently.

Care plan for a sick seal

There is a special emergency number in the Netherlands, 144, which you can call if there is a sick seal on the beach. After a report, the seal watchers ensure that all marine mammals in distress are picked up and taken care of after an observation, after consultation with A Seal. When seals arrive at A Seal, they are kept in isolation for the first 21 days. This stops viruses from spreading. A vet then looks at what care plan the animal needs. After successfully completing this care plan, the seal is released on the beaches at Ouddorp and Renesse.

The seal sanctuary

Besides the seals in the sanctuary, there is plenty to see at A Seal. A seal hospital has been created for children. Here the littlest visitors get the chance to patch up sick seals. Put on a doctor's jacket and take X-rays like A Seal s vet would. Or take a look around the Academy. Admire the display cases containing pieces of fur, lungworms and seal skulls. Informative videos are also played. There are regularly changing exhibitions on marine life.
