The charming town of Sommelsdijk is home to a very special building: Molen de Korenbloem. This round, stone stage mill was built as early as 1705, making it the oldest mill on the island. With its characteristic wooden top axle and cast-iron axle head, this mill is even the only one in South Holland. The mill is surrounded by photogenic dike houses.
An ode to the past
Over the centuries, Molen de Korenbloem has played an important role in grinding grain into flour. In fact, millers used to have the obligation to grind free wheat for the village's poor every year, a noble tradition that lasted until 1918. The mill also had a peeling stone and although the auxiliary motor was removed in the 1970s, the peeling box, tubs and the peeling tin are still present in the mill.
A new life
After restorations and changing owners, Molen de Korenbloem is currently owned by the Molenstichting Goeree-Overflakkee windmill foundation. Mill owner Marinus van Weenen ensures the grinding of grain with the mill and interested parties can visit it by appointment. A visit to Molen de Korenbloem is a journey back in time and a chance to enjoy the artisanal beauty of this special monument.
