Goedereede

The only town on Goeree-Overflakkee is a place with a lot of history: the barracks from the French era, the churches and the tower, the windmill, the former gates and fortifications, the agricultural barns - and so on. Goedereede used to be surrounded by water and had a very favourable location on the south-eastern tip of the island and therefore did not need a harbour for a long time. Ships anchored under the southern dike, and in bad weather, they could safely anchor 'at the roadstead' in the lee of the island, around the eastern corner. This is where the name 'Goede Reede' comes from.
