Bird observatory Tij is located in the De Scheelhoek nature reserve in Stellendam and is a unique place to spot birds. The observatory takes the shape of a gigantic egg measuring 8 by 11 metres, made of braided willow branches. Inside the egg is a bird hide that offers visitors great views of the Haringvliet, the delta nature and the Haringvliet locks. To reach Tij, follow a path that can be flooded at high tide, so boots are recommended.
A rich bird population
The observatory offers great views of the bird nesting islands where several species of birds can be seen, including the great tern, common tern and black-headed gull. Even the bald eagle visits this area regularly. A special Swarovski telescope in Tide allows visitors to observe these birds up close. In spring, you can see the young on the islets and in the water. The nature reserve is a paradise for water birds, which can be admired in the shallow waters.
Unique experience for nature and architecture lovers
The walk to Tij is an experience in itself. The route leads through reed beds and thickets, a perfect habitat for breeding birds. Upon arrival, an impressive wooden structure awaits, giving visitors access via a spiral staircase to a platform with stunning views over the Haringvliet. Managed by Natuurmonumenten, Tij's extraordinary architecture is internationally recognised and offers a unique experience for nature lovers and architecture enthusiasts alike.
