In this masterclass, drone photographer Paul Oostveen shares his experiences and tips for capturing beautiful yet responsible drone photography. With a drone, you can capture our natural and cultural landscapes in a completely different way than from the ground – from a new perspective. But how do you get the most out of your aerial photography? And how can you capture nature with a drone without disturbing it? Paul has been photographing natural landscapes and the countryside with a drone since 2014, mainly in the Netherlands and Iceland. From the air, he aims to show just how beautiful and surprising our landscapes are. But he also enjoys creating more abstract images, in which any sense of scale disappears. In this masterclass, Paul takes you through his entire process, including thorough preparation, optimal planning, executing the flight, the best compositions and, of course, avoiding disturbance. As well as standard aerial photographs, the masterclass also covers creating panoramas and capturing video footage. Topics:

  • Preparation: selecting areas, checking permissions and applying for them where necessary, risk assessment (how busy the area is, high obstacles nearby, roads, birds, large grazers), weather, KP index, wind measurements, international considerations.
  • During the flight: safety, the sequence of actions, how to fly without causing disruption? Minimum flying altitude in nature reserves.
  • Contingency plans (e.g. what to do if something unexpected happens, such as an approaching helicopter, a sudden change in the weather or a connection problem).
  • Aerial photography: what do I do differently compared to shooting from the ground? The influence of altitude, location, weather conditions and reflections in water. How can you take more creative drone photos?
When to take photos and videos: season, time of day, weather. Key considerations in cold, hot weather and when there is a chance of drizzle.
  • Filming with a drone: what drone movements can you make and combine, how do you fly as steadily and smoothly as possible, and what settings and ND filters should you use for the optimal shutter speed?
  • Long exposure times from the air (using neutral density filters).
  • Creating panoramas and 360-degree panoramas.

We won’t be flying drones today, but we will be carrying out a few tasks related to flight preparation.
Who is it for?
Anyone who takes or would like to take photos and/or videos of nature and the countryside using a drone. And anyone who wants to learn how, with the right preparation and the right choices, they can capture more beautiful aerial images in a responsible manner and without disturbing nature.
