On a bleak winter’s night in 1899, Aimée arrives in a remote mountain village in the snow-covered French Alps. She is a young, progressive schoolmistress, but in this community, isolated by snow and tradition, faith and legends prove to be at least as strong as letters and numbers. She is not deterred by this reception and, armed with her knowledge, is determined to tackle illiteracy and the deep-rooted superstition in the village. With every snowfall, Aimée’s commitment deepens, whilst at the same time an intense, sensual restlessness grows within her. When an avalanche sweeps away a young villager, reality is turned on its head and the fragile balance is disrupted. What follows is a poetic, unsettling and at times oppressive winter folk drama, in which longing, fear and superstition merge with the overwhelming power of nature.
